Turn Windows Phone 7 Device into a USB drive[How to Tutorial]

Right from the launch of Window Phone 7, hackers are busy in finding out more and more hacks and tweaks in order to make those things possible which are blocked or hidden by default in original firmware.  In this post we are going to show you the procedure through which you can turn your Window Phone7 into a USB Drive. It was something which we thought would never be supported.

The best part is, solution is very easy to implement. However, the bad part is you can make it USB Drive only with that computer which is already being used to sync your Window Phone 7. It means this solution is computer dependent and can’t be implemented with any computer. However, in future it might be possible to make it work with all computers.

Now i am going to guide you step by step about how to turn your Window Phone 7 device into a USB Drive.

  1. Open your registery editor by typing regedit in your window computer start menu.
  2. go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetEnumUSB and search for ZuneDriver as mentioned in above snapshot.
  3. Now you need to modify three entries.
    a.   Change ShowInShell from 0 to 1
    b.  Change PortableDeviceNameSpaceExcludeFromShell from 1 to 0
    c.  Change EnableLegacySupport from 0 to 1
  4. Once you finish changing these values, all you need to do is plug in your device and you will be able to see your phone show up in explorer.

However, if you want to modify the files then just close down the zune desktop app. Now you get the complete access of your phone and you can just copy/paste music, pictures, videos directly into your phone. You can copy/paste any file you want in there, but at same time you can’t access them on the device (e.g. Office docs).
